As bad as these questions may sound, they make sense to a lot of people. The holidays have come and gone, we’ve spent a fortune on food and gifts, and now we have to make sure we pull off Valentine’s Day, and it’s not even for us. It’s mostly for the person we’re dating or married to, just to prove that we care enough to make an effort.

Yes, celebrating Valentine’s Day can be exhausting. The fact that almost everyone celebrates it, even those who are single, means that it’s going to be one hectic month.

You have to make reservations (that is if you aren’t too late already), get some flowers (wait, why are they more expensive this time of year again?), buy chocolates (hello, diabetes), and on top of all that, find an extravagant way to express your love and affection to your significant other.

These are the standards and traditions that society has set up for us. The sad part is, it’s mostly the guys who are expected to go above and beyond to impress their partner during this so-called romantic holiday.

Even so, Valentine’s continues to be a huge thing for many couples, and if we don’t take part in it, everyone we know is going to refer to us as the Valentine’s Grinch.

While it’s understandable that you may not agree with all the Valentine’s Day fuss, let’s take a look at why celebrating this “special occasion” will never go out of style no matter where you are in the world.

Let’s face it, women love the attention.

Think about it. They have the perfect excuse to wear something nice or sexy. They get to go out and enjoy an evening filled with romance - what with the chocolates, flowers, a fancy dinner, and maybe even some more surprises here and there. They get to show off how much their partner loves them.

As silly as that sounds, it’s a cold hard fact of life that we’ve been forced to grow accustomed to for many years.

Then again, as much as we dislike going to the trouble of planning something wonderful for our significant other, we end up feeling good about ourselves when we realize we were able to pull it off.

And it’s not that we have anything to prove, either. Because even if your partner says that you don’t have to celebrate Valentine’s Day like the rest of the world, deep inside they’re hoping you won’t take their word for it.

And what happens when you don’t get them anything at all? Well, they’re not going to tell you, but there’s definitely going to be an air of disappointment lingering around the whole day. Don’t even bother pointing it out to them because it will only make things worse.

It’s basically an investment in your relationship.

It feels good to celebrate your love and appreciation for someone. In a way, you get to give back in terms of all the things they did for you to make you happy. And even if guys are expected to plan something nice for Valentine’s Day, girls can be pretty impressive in their efforts too.

Your partner might get you something you’ve had your eye on for a while, book tickets for a weekend getaway, or prepare a lovely evening dinner with you and your family.

And because you’re celebrating your love and appreciation for each other, you can look forward to another year of being together, happy and in love. In other words, the fancy dinners, the fancy getups, and all the fancy gifts you’ll be getting for each other to commemorate your love are worth it.

Love alone is worth celebrating, so you get the idea.

It’s only once a year (obviously).

It’s true that expressing your love for someone shouldn’t just be on Valentine’s Day, but every single day. But then another way to look at it is that this is the one particular day of the year where you get to go big with your romantic gestures and antics.

Sure, there’s going to be a lot of planning involved, not to mention time and money, but if you’re going to take part in the Valentine’s Day celebration, you might as well be thankful that it’s only once a year.

When you go out of your way to plan something nice for the person you care about, it’s mostly because you love making them happy. Seeing them happy makes you a hundred times happier. And not many people will say it, but regardless of whether or not you’re in a relationship, a small part of you will be happy that someone cared enough to show you some love on Valentine’s Day.

There’s more to it than love and fancy celebrations.

You can list down all the reasons why celebrating Valentine’s Day is insignificant or unnecessary, but when you look at the reasons why you should celebrate it, you’ll find that it’s not so bad after all.

It’s not every day that we celebrate our successes and victories in life, much less when it’s with the person we love. So if there’s a day dedicated for you to do just that, why not?

Real, genuine love will make you want to celebrate the happiness it brings to your life. Even in some countries, Valentine’s Day is not just celebrated among lovers or married couples, but also among family and friends. And truth be told, if we are truly grateful and appreciative of the love we have, one day isn’t enough to celebrate it.

As the world puts it, love is a universal language. It is probably the only language any person can understand without the use of words. And because it’s a language everyone speaks, it’s enough reason to know that it will never die out.
